The Experience

Red sand crunches under the tires as our Land Cruiser bounces over the dunes—honestly, I still find sand in my shoes days later. Our guide, Khalid, pointed out a group of camels lounging near a fence; they barely glanced up as we passed. He laughed and said they're regulars on this route.

As the sun dipped lower, we reached the camp just as the sky turned that soft orange-pink you only get in the desert. There was a buzz of activity—kids trying sandboarding for the first time (I gave it a go too; let's just say it's trickier than it looks), women getting delicate henna designs on their hands, and someone pouring cardamom-scented coffee into tiny cups. The buffet was ready soon after: grilled chicken, smoky eggplant, flatbreads warm from the fire.
