The Experience

The first thing I remember is how quiet the desert felt as we pulled up—just this soft hum from our driver’s car and then nothing but sand stretching out, silver in the headlights. Our guide, Ahmed, handed me a helmet and grinned like he knew what was coming. I could smell something dry and almost metallic in the air, maybe just the sand cooling off after a hot day. The buggy looked like it belonged in a sci-fi movie. I hesitated for a second before climbing in—felt my hands sweat inside the gloves.

We started slow, following Ahmed’s taillights as they bounced ahead over the dunes. Then he waved us on, and suddenly it was just us and this roaring engine kicking up clouds behind us. You really can’t see much except what’s right in front of you—the rest is just black desert and stars so sharp you want to reach for them. My friend tried to shout something at me but all I caught was laughter over the engine noise. At one point we stopped on top of a dune; Ahmed pointed out Orion (I think?) and poured us cold water from his backpack. It tasted dusty but good.

I didn’t expect to feel so small out there—like you’re floating between sky and sand with no city lights anywhere. There was this moment when I killed the engine for a second and everything went silent except for someone else’s buggy way off in the dark. It’s weirdly peaceful, even though your heart’s still hammering from all that speed. We headed back after two hours—my shirt full of sand, hair wild, grinning like an idiot. The hotel pickup made getting home easy (thank god, because I was wiped). Still think about that view sometimes when I close my eyes at night.
