The experience

You pick up the walkie-talkie before you leave the pavement. The guide in the lead vehicle walks you through deflating the tires (a hands-on step that changes how the Jeep grips the sand), then you follow him into the dunes. For the next 5.5 hours, you are driving, not watching. The guide's voice comes through the radio with instructions on angle, speed, and line as you learn to bash the dunes, drift across the flats, and traverse terrain that shifts under you. This is not a tour where someone else navigates. You are making every decision at the wheel.

The landscape opens as you climb. You will see wild life scattered across the red sand, and the guide positions you for the best light and angles: professional photos of your drive are supplied at no cost. The climax is the push to Fossil Rock, where the dunes rise high enough that the vast desert spreads out below you as the sun begins to set. The whole family can handle it. The activity is designed to be thrilling and safe at once, and even young kids remember the moment they crested a dune in a vehicle they were driving themselves.

Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, so you do not arrange transport to the start. Fuel, the walkie-talkie, safety equipment, and bottled water come with the experience. If you want two people to drive the same Jeep, you can upgrade at checkout. The second driver takes the wheel for part of the run, and both of you get the same instruction and the same dunes.

Drivers aged 21–24 can drive once you are in the desert, though the main driver for the whole experience must be 25 or older. Your valid driving license must be on the Road and Transportation Authority's approved list, or you will need an international driving permit.

What happens at Fossil Rock?

Fossil Rock is the high point of the drive. You climb the tallest dunes to reach it, and from there the vast red sand desert spreads out in all directions. The guide times the arrival for sunset, so you see the light change across the landscape before you head back.

Do I need any special skills to bash the dunes?

No. The guide teaches you the techniques in real time (how to read the sand, what angle to take, how fast to go), and you apply them as you drive. It is designed for the whole family, and the guide's instructions on the walkie-talkie keep you safe while you learn.

Can two of us take turns driving?

Yes. You can upgrade to the 2-Driver Experience at checkout, which lets both of you drive the same Jeep for part of the run. Both drivers get the same instruction and access to the dunes.
