The Experience

"Don’t worry, it’s safe!" our driver Khalid grinned as he let some air out of the tires. I wasn’t so sure — the 4x4 looked like it had seen things — but somehow that made it better. The drive from Dubai was quick; city glass faded into endless sand in under an hour. The air changed too, drier and carrying this faint mineral tang. When we hit the first dune, my stomach did a little flip. Dune bashing is exactly what it sounds like: up, down, sideways — sand everywhere. I laughed so hard I nearly missed Khalid’s playlist switching from Arabic pop to something that sounded suspiciously like Shakira.

We stopped for photos just as the sun started dropping behind the ridges. The light went gold and everything felt quieter out there than I expected — except for a group of kids chasing each other with a soccer ball near some camels. My own camel was named Rami (I asked; the handler smiled and patted his nose), and riding him felt both awkward and oddly peaceful. Sand boarding came next; I wiped out twice but honestly didn’t care because the sand was warm even after sunset. Someone handed me sweet tea while I tried to brush grit out of my shoes.

The camp itself was buzzing by the time we arrived — lanterns swinging, music starting up. There were henna artists painting delicate patterns on hands (mine smudged immediately), a falconer letting us hold his bird (he winked when I flinched), and tables filling with smoky smells from the BBQ buffet. Belly dancers took over after dinner, then a fire show that made everyone gasp at least once. Somewhere in there I got talked into trying Sufi spinning — lasted about four turns before getting dizzy and giving up. Still think about that sky full of stars on the drive back, sand still stuck to my ankles.
