The Experience

“You see that ridge?” our driver Khalid grinned as he pointed at a line of red-gold dunes outside Dubai. “Hold tight — this is where the fun starts.” I’d read about dune bashing on every Dubai desert safari blog but nothing really prepares you for the way the 4x4 tilts and slides, tires spitting up little clouds of sand while everyone in the back laughs or shrieks. I caught a whiff of dust and something sweet — maybe someone’s perfume? — as we bounced along. There was this moment when we stopped at the top and everything went quiet except for the wind. The sun was just starting to dip, turning the sand almost coppery. I tried sandboarding after that (not gracefully), and Khalid pretended not to notice how badly I wiped out.
