The Experience

The vehicle picks you up from Abu Dhabi in the late afternoon, and within an hour you're crossing into the dunes. The desert safari itself moves fast — camel riding comes first, then sandboarding down slopes that feel steeper than they look, and a stop for photos in traditional Arabic dress with a falcon. By the time the sun starts dropping, you're back at the camp, which is when the overnight desert safari really shifts into a different gear.

Dinner happens under open sky at long tables, and it's a proper spread — grilled meats, salads, bread, the kind of buffet where you don't have to choose. There's henna being applied in one corner, flavored shisha if you want it, and water and soft drinks throughout. The performances start as it gets dark: belly dancing, then Tanoura (the spinning skirt thing), then fire dancers. It's not subtle, but it works — the energy is high and nobody's pretending to be bored.

Your tent is the part that surprised me most. Not a canvas sleeping bag situation — it's a proper room with a bed, air conditioning, and actual amenities. You can sleep as late as you want, though most people wake for the sunrise, which is genuinely worth it. Breakfast comes after, and then the return transfer to Abu Dhabi takes about an hour depending on traffic.
