The experience

The dune bashing starts the moment your 4x4 leaves the Abu Dhabi hotel. A skilled marshal takes the vehicle up and down the sand at angles that feel impossible until you're actually in it. It's the kind of thing that sounds like it might be rough, but the suspension and the driver's rhythm make it almost fluid, and after an hour of that your legs feel like they've done something real. Then you pull into the Bedouin-style camp as the light starts to soften, and the pace shifts entirely.
