The experience

It started with Sarah waving us over at the edge of Owino Market. She had this way of smiling like she already knew half your story. She handed me a tiny fried cassava piece (I think it was called “gonja”?) and I tried to say thank you in Luganda. She laughed, corrected me gently, then pointed out a row of stalls where the air smelled like charcoal and ripe mangoes. Our guide, Patrick, just grinned and said, “Welcome to real Kampala.” The market noise was something else: clattering pans, bursts of laughter, people calling out prices in three languages at once. I kept losing track of what direction we were going but somehow Patrick always found the next alley.

We passed the Old Taxi Park: honestly just chaos on wheels. Hundreds of matatus packed so tight I wondered how anyone ever found their ride. A driver leaned out and yelled something at Patrick (they seemed to know each other), then waved us through a shortcut between two buses. I could feel the heat coming off the engines and caught a whiff of diesel mixed with grilled meat from a nearby vendor. It wasn’t pretty but it felt alive in that way only big cities do.

The Uganda National Mosque was quieter than I expected: shoes off, cool tile underfoot, sunlight spilling through colored glass. Climbing those 272 steps up the minaret nearly did me in (I’m not exactly fit), but wow… standing at the top with wind in my face and all of Kampala spread out below made my legs forget they were tired for a minute. Patrick pointed out Lake Victoria on the horizon. It looked impossibly far but also close enough to touch if you squinted right.

Lunch was somewhere tucked behind Nakasero Market. We sat elbow-to-elbow with locals eating posho and beans off metal plates. A little girl kept staring at my camera until her mom nudged her to say hi. I still think about that shy wave sometimes. The walk took us past Kabaka’s Palace too: beautiful gardens hiding stories darker than I expected (Patrick didn’t sugarcoat anything). By then my feet hurt but honestly? Didn’t want it to end just yet.
