The Experience

The boat leaves the dock and you're moving through Grace Bay before you've finished your coffee. Turquoise water stretches in every direction—the kind that looks photoshopped until you're actually in it. Your captain points toward the eastern tip of Providenciales and throttles out to Leeward Reef, where the water changes color again, deeper and darker, which is how you know the reef is below. Most people jump in without hesitation. The reef system here is the third largest in the world, and the fish don't care how many tourists show up—they move through the coral like they own it, which they do.

Back on the boat, wrapped in a towel and dripping salt water on the deck, you cruise the chain of cays toward Half Moon Bay. This is the part where time gets weird. The captain slows down, the engine drops to a murmur, and someone hands you a rum punch. There's a slide on board if you want it—actual fun, not ironic fun. Little Water Cay, also called Iguana Island, sits right there, and you can wade across the sandbar to walk around and look for the rock iguanas that live on the island. Some people skip the wading and just float in the shallows, drink in hand, watching the light move across the water. The snorkel tour from Providenciales doesn't rush this part.

Lunch happens on board: turkey and tuna wraps, conch fritters, fresh fruit, cookies. They'll make you a veggie wrap if you ask. Drinks keep coming—beer, rum punch, water, juice, whatever. The ride back to Provo is slow, the trade winds are real, and by the time you dock you've been on the water for about four hours and somehow feel like you've been gone all day. Your shoulders are probably burned, your hair is stiff with salt, and you're already thinking about when you can book it again.
