The Experience

We nearly missed the boat—literally. The tram was packed (someone’s cat in a backpack meowing the whole way), and we fumbled our way to the dock just as they started boarding. Our guide, Emre, grinned and waved us over like he’d seen this a hundred times before. I was still catching my breath when we pulled away from the shore, but then the city started to slide by and I forgot about everything else.

The first thing that hit me was the air—salty, a bit smoky from someone’s simit cart on land. We drifted under Galata Bridge where people were fishing in silence or laughing in little groups. Emre pointed out Galata Tower rising above everything, telling us about some guy who supposedly flew across the Bosphorus centuries ago (I’m still not sure if he was serious). The light got softer as we passed Dolmabahce Palace—its windows almost gold—and then Ortaköy Mosque just sort of appeared out of nowhere, all delicate against the water. Someone nearby whispered “wow” under their breath. I get it now.

Passing under the Bosphorus Bridge was strange—you really do feel like you’re floating between continents for a second. Kids on deck tried to guess which side was Europe and which was Asia. The boat felt calm but alive; there was WiFi but nobody seemed to care much after a while. When we reached Rumeli Fortress, Emre told us how it was built in just four months (he said “Ottoman Red Bull,” which made everyone laugh). The sun dipped behind clouds for a moment and suddenly all those palaces—Küçüksu Pavilion, Topkapi—looked like they belonged in another time.

I kept thinking about how Istanbul never really stops moving—even from the water you hear car horns and calls to prayer drifting over. On our way back past Süleymaniye Mosque, the sky turned that weird blue-pink you only get right before dark here. I tried to take a photo but it didn’t catch what I felt standing there with strangers who suddenly didn’t feel so strange anymore.
