The Experience

I didn’t expect my heart to thump that loud when we reached the top of Babadağ. The drive up was already something — hairpin turns, pine trees brushing the windows, our pilot (his name was Cem) humming a Turkish pop song I’d never heard before. When we stepped out, the air smelled sharp and clean, like cold stone and wind. I just stared at that drop for a second too long. Cem grinned and said, “Don’t look down yet.” Of course I did anyway.

The harness felt snug but not tight — honestly, more comfortable than I thought it would be. Cem explained everything in this calm way that made me trust him instantly. He checked the lines twice, then three times. “Just run when I say,” he told me. So yeah, when he shouted “Go!” I ran like my shoes were on fire — barely noticed the ground vanish under my feet until suddenly there was nothing but air and this wild blue below us. I could smell salt from the sea even though we were so high up, and for a few seconds it was just wind in my face and Oludeniz spread out like a painting.

We floated for maybe 25 minutes — hard to keep track with your stomach flipping and your eyes glued to that turquoise water. Cem pointed out Butterfly Valley far off to the left; he tried to teach me how to say it in Turkish but I completely butchered it (he laughed so hard he almost dropped his sunglasses). There were other paragliders drifting nearby but it still felt quiet up there, just us and the sound of fabric snapping in the wind. Landing was softer than expected — sand underfoot, legs shaky but grinning like an idiot. Transfers back were quick; everyone buzzing about their own flights.
