The Experience
I didn’t expect the wind to smell like sage when we stepped out near Uchisar Castle — it hit me right away. Our guide, Ece, waved us over to a viewpoint where the castle looked less like a fortress and more like something from a dream. She pointed out old pigeon holes carved into the stone (apparently for fertilizer — who knew?). The sky was that washed-out blue you only get in central Turkey. I tried to take a photo but it never really catches how wide everything feels here.
Pasabag Valley was next. The fairy chimneys are taller than I thought — some look like they’re balancing hats. Ece called them “mushroom chimneys” and told us monks used to live inside. We ducked into one of the caves; the air was cool and smelled faintly of dust and old stone. There was this moment where everyone just went quiet, listening to our footsteps echoing around the hollow room. It felt weirdly peaceful.
Lunch in Avanos was simple but good — lentil soup, fresh bread, and something with eggplant that I still think about sometimes. The town is famous for pottery, so after eating we watched an old guy named Mustafa shape red clay from the Kızılırmak River into a bowl. He grinned when I tried spinning the wheel myself (let’s just say my bowl would not survive shipping). The whole place had this earthy smell from wet clay and wood fires.
Zelve Open-Air Museum was probably my favorite stop on this day trip from Goreme to Cappadocia’s valleys. Walking through those empty cave homes and churches — some walls still painted with faded saints — made me wonder what daily life here used to sound like. Devrent Valley came last; people kept pointing out rocks shaped like camels or seals (I could kind of see it). By then my shoes were full of dust and my head full of odd little details I didn’t expect to remember.
