The experience

Ever wonder what’s behind those bright rugs you see in Bodrum’s shops? I did too, until we left the city behind and drove out to Etrim. Our guide, Cem, grew up nearby. He waved at nearly everyone we passed. The air changed as soon as we reached the village. It smelled like wood smoke and wild herbs. There was this slow rhythm to things: chickens wandering around, old men playing backgammon outside the coffee shop, kids running barefoot. I tried saying “merhaba” (hello) but my accent made one of the women laugh so hard she almost dropped her tea.

Cem took us into a family home where women were weaving on these huge wooden looms. You could hear the soft thunk-thunk of the shuttle moving back and forth. The rugs looked nothing like what I’d seen in tourist shops: more faded blues and earthy reds, patterns that apparently mean something about family or luck (I wish I remembered which was which). One woman let me try tying a knot. Let’s just say my fingers weren’t made for this. She grinned anyway and patted my hand. The smell of wool stuck to my sleeves for hours after.

Lunch was set up outside under a fig tree: tomatoes still warm from the sun, bread that steamed when you broke it open, olive oil pressed right there in the village. Someone brought out honeycomb and strong tea in tiny glasses. I didn’t expect to feel so welcome or so full. On the way back through Etrim, Cem pointed out the mosque with its blue tiles and explained how everyone helps keep it up, even if they don’t go every week. It felt like a place where people actually know each other’s names.
