The experience

The day starts with a jeep pickup from your hotel and heads into the foothills, passing through villages where you'll see traditional houses, orchards, and a working silk-spinning factory. A stop at a local cafe lets you buy gozleme, the hand-rolled Turkish pastry filled with spinach, cheese or meat. Then comes Dwarf Cave, an underground passage carved with stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over millions of years.

Sapadere Canyon is where the route opens up. You walk the canyon floor along turquoise water, past hidden waterfalls and pools, until the trail ends at a main waterfall dropping down the rocks. The pools are deep enough to swim in. Lunch happens afterward at a restaurant on the riverbank in the mountains, serving typical Turkish food.

The return to Alanya includes a stop at a souvenir shop, then the jeep ride back down. The whole outing takes 7 to 8 hours. Infants travel on an adult's lap. The jeep ride and canyon walking are not suitable for people with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or serious heart conditions.
