Then the route moves into downtown Tunis around 11:30, where the Medina, built in the 7th century, opens into narrow souks and the layered streets where the city still lives. Lunch comes next, either at La Goulette or Sidi Bou Saïd depending on what suits you that day. By 2pm you're at Carthage, where the Roman archaeological sites scatter across the hillside: the Tophet, the Punic port, the amphitheater, a Roman villa, the Antonine baths. The museum there and the Saint-Louis cathedral follow. Late afternoon lands you in Sidi Bou Saïd, the whitewashed quarter where artists work and the cafés serve mint tea. You get free time to wander the painted doors and steep streets, or settle into the Café des Délices.
