The experience
The Great Mosque of Kairouan anchors the morning: the oldest in the Maghreb, with a guided tour of its architecture and history. From there you move through the Sidi Sahbi Mausoleum, where colorful ceramics and stucco work cover the walls, and the Aghlabid Basins, a 9th-century water management system built into the landscape. The medina walk takes you through narrow streets where you stop at a local pastry artisan to taste Makroudh, the regional specialty, with free time afterward for photos and shopping for carpets or handicrafts.
The second half is the journey to Kesra, perched at the highest point in Tunisia. A scenic walk climbs stone steps up to natural water springs, and the Kesra Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions holds exhibits on local culture and the history of the fig tree. You get a moment to rest and take in the views of the surrounding plains before the return drive.
