The experience
The day starts in Testour, a village founded by Andalusian Moors, where the Great Mosque stands out for its counter-clockwise clock: a detail that marks the Moorish architectural tradition. From there, the route climbs to Dougga, perched on a hilltop and the best-preserved Roman site in the region. You walk through the Capitol, a temple dedicated to Jupiter, Juno and Minerva that overlooks the valley; the Roman Theatre, still used for festivals and one of North Africa's most intact; and the Libyco-Punic Mausoleum, a rare pre-Roman tomb from the 2nd century BC. The scale and placement of these structures across the hillside give the site its UNESCO status.
After a local lunch (arranged at a nearby restaurant, cost separate), Bulla Regia reveals a different Roman world: subterranean villas built underground to escape the summer heat. You descend into the House of Amphitrite, known for its well-preserved floor mosaics, and the House of the Hunt, an underground complex that shows how Romans built domestic luxury below ground. These villas are world-renowned for this unique approach to climate control and domestic design.
