The experience
The day opens in Kairouan, one of Tunisia's most important religious and cultural centers. You'll walk through the medina's narrow streets, see local craftspeople at work, and visit the Great Mosque of Kairouan. The Aghlabid Basins, a series of historic water reservoirs, sit on the edge of the old city. You'll have time to explore them and the surrounding quarter at your own pace before heading south.
El Jem Amphitheatre comes next, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the best-preserved Roman monuments anywhere. The structure rises from flat farmland without walls or surrounding city, so its scale hits differently than European ruins hemmed in by towns. You can walk the underground passages where gladiators and animals once waited, then climb to the upper levels for views across the plains. The guide explains the layout and history. How long you spend inside is yours to decide.
The final stop is Monastir, a coastal town built around the Ribat: a fortress that juts into the Mediterranean and has guarded the shoreline since the 9th century. You'll explore the structure itself, then have a break at the marina to sit by the water and watch the boats. The drive back to your hotel takes the late afternoon, arriving eight to ten hours after departure. The vehicle is air-conditioned throughout, and the guide speaks English, French, German or Arabic depending on your group.
