The experience
I didn’t expect the first thing I’d notice in Kairouan to be the scent: somewhere between cumin and old stone, drifting out from a tiny shop as we followed our guide through the medina. He waved at a friend selling dates (they joked about football, I think), and then pointed out how the morning light hit the mosque’s minaret just right. It was quiet for a second, except for the call to prayer echoing off those ancient walls. I tried to say “shukran” at a bakery and got a smile, and maybe the best makroud I’ve ever tasted, all sticky-sweet with orange blossom.
El Jem felt different: almost too big for its own good. Our host-driver (Sami, who grew up nearby) told us gladiator stories while we walked under arches that looked like they could swallow you whole. The air inside was cooler than outside. You could almost hear the crowd if you stood still enough. Down in the tunnels, it smelled faintly of dust and something metallic. Sami laughed when I asked if he’d ever snuck in as a kid (“maybe once or twice”). There were mosaics in the museum that made me wish I’d paid more attention in art class.
By Monastir, my brain was full but my legs kept going. The Ribat sits above everything: windy up there but worth it for that view over blue water and white roofs. We watched some kids fishing near the marina while our guide explained why everyone touches the marble at Bourguiba Mausoleum (for luck? respect? both?). Lunch was whatever we felt like. Our driver knew a spot where locals eat grilled fish with harissa that stings your lips just enough. The sun was low by then, and honestly, I didn’t want to leave yet.
