The experience
The tour starts in Kairouan, where you walk the narrow medina streets (on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 1988), and visit the three-gated mosque at the heart of the city. Outside the medina walls stand the Barbier mosque, the mausoleum of Sidi Sahbi, and the hydraulic cisterns built in the ninth century, considered the most important water systems in Muslim history. Your guide explains the city's place as the fourth holy city of Islam and the spiritual capital of Tunisia.
From there you travel to El Djem to see the Roman amphitheater, built in the third century AD and classified as a World Heritage site in 1972. It held 30,000 spectators and ranks third in size in the Roman world, after Rome's Colosseum and Capua's arena, and it is the most impressive Roman monument in Africa. After the amphitheater, you visit the archaeological museum, housed in a reconstructed Roman villa, where mosaics, statues, terracotta pieces and glasswork span from the 11th to the 5th century.
The day ends in Monastir, where you pass the birthplace of Habib Bourguiba, Tunisia's first president, and visit his mausoleum. You have free time to explore the ribat, a fortified monastery overlooking the sea, and the marina. The air-conditioned vehicle and professional guide stay with you throughout, and bottled water is provided.
