The Experience

You start in the Medina of Tunis, a sprawling maze of ancient streets lined with covered souks, artisan workshops, historic palaces and mosques decorated with tiles and marble columns. From there the route moves to Carthage, the archaeological site where Roman ruins scatter across the modern city, then climbs to Sidi Bou Saïd, a cliff-top village of blue and white Ottoman-Andalusian architecture overlooking the sea.

Day two takes you inland to Kairouan, Islam's fourth holiest city. The Great Mosque dominates — built in 670, its minaret and courtyard with marble columns and carved cedar doors make it one of the oldest and most impressive mosques in the world. You walk the medina's souks and taste Kairouan's pastries, then drive to El Djem to stand inside the amphitheater, a Roman structure from the 3rd century that once seated 30,000 and ranks third in size after Rome and Capua. The Archaeological Museum there holds mosaics, sculptures and ceramics from the site's excavations.

The final day moves along the coast: Hammamet's medina and beaches, Sousse's UNESCO-listed medina with its homogeneous Arab-Muslim architecture, and Monastir's Ribat, a 9th-century fortress built by Arab conquerors. A hundred spiral steps lead to the watchtower, where you get views across the city and sea. All site entries, the vehicle and driver are arranged; you choose your guide's language at booking.
