The experience
The tour starts in Port of Spain itself, where you spend most of the morning and early afternoon walking through the city's 19th and 20th-century landmarks. Your guide takes you past the Cathedral, Woodford Square, and the Red House, then drives you up to Fort George, which sits approximately 350 feet above sea level. From there you get a view across the whole capital and the surrounding landscape. Along the way you'll taste fresh coconut water and local jelly: the kind of small detail that makes the difference between a quick pass through and actually tasting what the place is.
After the city portion, the route heads north along the coast toward Maracas Beach, the island's most popular stretch of sand. You'll stop at the Maracas lookout first, where the Caribbean opens up in front of you. Then you have time to swim in the water itself. While you're there, you can order bake and shark, the famous local street food, and other snacks. These are available to purchase, not included in the tour price.
The whole day runs six hours from pickup to drop-off. Your guide is a professional who speaks English or Spanish, and they handle the route and the commentary. Hotel pickup and return are built in, so you don't arrange your own transport to the starting point.
