The experience

What makes this snorkeling day work is the speedboat itself. A premium speedboat cuts the crossing time and gives you a steadier ride than the standard longtails, which matters when you're covering open water between Phuket and the Phi Phi Islands. The boat leaves early enough that you hit Maya Bay before the afternoon crowds, and the route strings together four stops in five to eight hours: Maya Bay, Pi Leh Lagoon, Monkey Beach and Viking Cave. You're in the water at each one, not watching from a distance.

Pi Leh Lagoon is the centerpiece for snorkeling. The lagoon sits on Koh Phi Phi Leh island, ringed by limestone cliffs, and the water runs green and shallow over some of Thailand's most abundant coral reef systems. You'll have snorkeling equipment, a life jacket and the option to rent clear kayaks or paddleboards if you want to explore the lagoon without diving. Maya Bay, famous from the film The Beach, is a beach stop where you swim and wade. Viking Cave is a limestone cave with wall paintings and a lookout over the islands. Monkey Beach rounds out the day.

The boat picks you up from your hotel in Phuket Old Town or Patong and returns you the same way. Breakfast waits at the pier before departure, and lunch is a buffet served on the island with seasonal fruit and soft drinks. An English-speaking guide travels with the group and can also speak Thai, Russian or Mandarin. Snorkeling gear and life jackets are provided. You bring only a towel and sunscreen. National park fees are paid separately at the pier on the day.

Is this one for you?The five to eight hour commitment leaves room for a meal or rest in Phuket before or after, but rules out combining this with another full-day activity. If you're splitting your day between the islands and the city, a half-day snorkeling trip would fit better.
