The Experience

There’s this moment when you’re sitting on the edge of the boat, wetsuit sticking to your skin, and all you can hear is the slap of water against fiberglass and someone laughing in Thai at the back. That was me this morning off Koh Lanta — not sure if it was nerves or excitement making my hands fidget with my mask. Our guide, Lek, grinned and gave us a thumbs up before we rolled back into that unreal blue.

The first thing I noticed underwater wasn’t even the fish — it was how quiet everything got. You know that muffled sound when you’re under and all you hear is your own bubbles? Then a school of barracuda flashed past and I almost forgot to breathe (not recommended). Lek pointed out a black-tip reef shark cruising by like it owned the place. I tried to say “shark” in Thai later at lunch — failed miserably, but everyone laughed and passed me more pineapple. Lunch was simple but perfect: rice, curry, fruit. The scent of lemongrass clung to my fingers after.

We did two dives (some folks went for a third), each spot different — coral fans waving around like they were dancing. It’s hard to describe how the light moves down there; everything feels slower. Back on deck, sun-warmed towels and sticky skin, I just sat for a while watching the horizon blur out. Still think about that silence sometimes.
