The experience
The speedboat leaves Khao Lak in the morning and makes four separate snorkeling stops across the Similan Islands. You start at Islands No.5 and No.6, where the coral reefs sit in clear water and schools of tropical fish move through them. After an hour or two in the water, the boat takes you to Princess Bay on Koh Miang (Island No.4), where you beach for lunch: a Thai meal served in a quiet cove with white sand and shallow water for swimming between courses.
The afternoon splits into two more underwater stops. Christmas Point or Namchai Bay at Koh Ba Ngu (Island No.9) is one of the Similan Islands' most-visited snorkeling sites, with coral formations and schools of reef fish. Dolphins and sea turtles pass through these waters, though sightings are not guaranteed. The final stop is Sailing Rock on Koh Similan (Island No.8), the most photographed landmark in the chain. You can swim in the turquoise water around it or climb the rock itself for a view across the islands and the Andaman Sea.
Hotel pickup from Khao Lak is included, as are the speedboat, snorkeling equipment, life jacket, a professional guide who speaks English or Thai, lunch, snacks, seasonal fruit, and drinking water with tea and coffee. The full day runs about ten hours from pickup to drop-off. Accident insurance is covered. Bring a copy of your passport or ID (or a photo on your phone) for check-in before boarding. The national park entrance fee of 400 THB per adult and 200 THB per child is separate.
