The experience

Racha Yai Island sits about an hour from Phuket and draws both beginners trying scuba for the first time and divers with certifications looking for healthy coral. The boat picks you up from your hotel in Patong, Kata, Karon, Chalong or one of the other included zones, then heads to Seafarer Divers at Chalong Pier for a final briefing before departure. The conditions there stay calm and shallow enough that a first-timer can complete a Discover Scuba certification in the water with an instructor watching the whole time, while certified divers move to deeper sections of the same reef to hunt for the tropical fish and anemones the site is known for.

Everyone gets full equipment (tanks, wetsuits, masks, fins), or snorkeling gear with a life jacket if you're staying on the surface. The crew handles the setup. You just show up ready to move. A PADI instructor or divemaster stays with the diving group, and a dedicated snorkeling guide watches over anyone not diving. Non-divers who want to skip the underwater part altogether can snorkel in the same clear water or simply rest on deck. The boat carries breakfast before the first dive, then a buffet lunch between dives, plus tea, coffee, soft drinks and water throughout the day.

The whole outing takes seven hours from pickup to drop-off. A minimum 18-hour gap is required between your last dive and any flight home. The experience runs in English, French, Russian and Thai, and children from age one can come along: infants ride free on an adult's lap. Weather and sea conditions may shift the schedule, but the operator builds the day around keeping everyone safe and comfortable in the water.

How long does the whole experience take from pickup to drop-off?
