Phuket City Tour: Big Buddha, Wat Chalong & Old Town
Three landmarks, one morning: the Buddha's views, the temple's history, and the streets that built the island.
A half-day Phuket city tour visits the Big Buddha statue on Mount Nagakerd, Wat Chalong temple and the colorful shophouses of Phuket Old Town with an English-speaking guide, hotel pickup in Patong, Kata or Karon, water and refreshments included. The tour runs 5 to 6 hours and leaves time for the beach afterward. Pickup in other areas incurs an extra charge.
Step-by-step itinerary
Phuket cultural landmarks and views
- Hotel pick-up in air-conditioned vehicle
- Visit Big Buddha and photo stop
- Explore Wat Chalong temple
- Tour Cashew Nut Factory
- Coffee break and shopping at Duty Free Shop
- Stroll Phuket Old Town streets
The Experience
The tour starts with pickup from your hotel lobby in an air-conditioned vehicle. You head first to the Big Buddha, a 45-meter white marble statue on Mount Nagakerd that commands 360-degree views across the southern part of the island. (The site is currently closed for visitors to ascend, so the guide takes you to a viewing area on the backside where you can photograph the monument.) From there you move to Wat Chalong, Phuket's largest Buddhist temple, where you walk through the intricate architecture and see the Grand Pagoda that holds a splinter of Lord Buddha's bone.
The route also includes a stop at a local cashew nut factory to watch the production process, and a coffee break at a duty-free shop where you can browse. The final stop is Phuket Old Town, where you stroll the historical streets of Thalang and Soi Rommanee lined with colorful Sino-Portuguese shophouses and street art. Your guide explains local history and traditions as you move through each site, and the whole arc fits inside a half-day, which is why many travelers book it before heading to the beach.

What's the Big Buddha like if it's closed to visitors right now?
The Big Buddha statue itself remains visible and impressive from a special viewing area on the backside of Mount Nagakerd, where you can take photos and see the 45-meter white marble monument against the island landscape, even though you won't be able to walk up to the peak itself.
Does the tour include meals or just the coffee break?
The tour includes a coffee and tea break at a duty-free shop, plus bottled water and a refreshing towel throughout the day, but no meals are provided.
What is Wat Chalong and why does the guide spend time there?
Wat Chalong is Phuket's most important and revered Buddhist temple, and the tour includes it because the Grand Pagoda inside holds a splinter of Lord Buddha's bone—a significant religious artifact—and the temple's intricate architecture reflects the island's spiritual heritage.
How long is the tour and will I have time for the beach after?
The tour runs 5 to 6 hours, which is why it's called a half-day experience; most travelers finish by early afternoon and have the rest of the day free for the beach or other activities.
Is pickup from my hotel included, or does it cost extra?
Roundtrip hotel pickup is included if you're staying in Patong, Kata or Karon; pickups from other areas like Kamala, Phuket Town, Rawai, Surin, Laguna or the northern beaches incur an additional charge.
Can I do this tour if I'm not very mobile or traveling with young children?
The tour is wheelchair accessible and suitable for all fitness levels; infants can ride in a pram or stroller, and young children can sit on an adult's lap during the vehicle portions.
