The Experience

I didn’t expect the color of the water to look so unreal when we first pulled up near Ko Phi Phi Le — it was this shifting green-blue, almost like someone had turned the saturation up too high. Our guide, Nok, grinned when she saw my face and just said, “Wait until you jump in.” She handed me a mask (brand new mouthpiece, which I weirdly appreciated) and I slid into the water. The fish were everywhere — yellow stripes darting around my legs — and I could hear muffled laughter from the boat above. It’s funny how quickly you forget about everything else when you’re floating there.

We stopped by Maya Bay for photos — you can’t actually walk on the sand right now because they’re restoring it (Nok explained why, something about too many feet and turtles needing space). Still, seeing those limestone cliffs up close felt kind of surreal. There were only rangers around, no crowds. The air smelled faintly salty-sweet and I kept thinking of that Leonardo DiCaprio movie but honestly it was quieter than I’d imagined. After that we cruised past Monkey Beach — a whole gang of macaques hanging out on the rocks. One actually swam out toward us; Nok warned us not to feed them but I think they knew better anyway.

Lunch was at this fancy resort on Bamboo Island — not what I pictured after a morning in saltwater hair. Buffet style but all halal food (which made my friend happy), and somehow even the rice tasted better after snorkeling for hours. We had more time there than anywhere else; some people napped under palm trees or just floated where the sand met the sea. I tried to nap too but mostly just watched sunlight flicker through my eyelids and listened to kids shouting in Thai somewhere down the beach.

On our way back we stopped at Viking Cave — Nok told us about how locals collect birds’ nests there for soup (she laughed when someone asked if she’d ever tried it; “Too expensive!”). The sun was starting to dip behind clouds by then and everything felt slower. Maybe it was just tiredness or maybe it was something else, but I remember thinking: this is one of those days that sticks with you for a while.
