The experience

Petchaburi is one of Thailand's oldest cities, and the tour centers on three sites that show why. Khao Wang, the Summer Palace of King Rama V, sits on a 92-meter hill and mixes Thai, neoclassical Western and Chinese architecture across royal halls, palaces and temples. You take a cable car to the summit instead of climbing, and the old palaces are now museums displaying the royal amenities used by King Rama IV and King Rama V.

Wat Mahathat temple stands in the town center, its most striking feature a 42-meter-tall five-tiered prang (stupa) in Ayutthaya style, decorated with stucco relief work that is a specialty of Petchaburi's local artisans. Inside the sanctuary are early-20th-century murals, though they are damaged. About 4 kilometers north of town, Khao Luang Cave Temple is a stalactite-filled cavern that was a favorite of King Rama IV when he was a monk. A natural skylight at the top sends sunlight down through the cave each morning, illuminating the stones and making the interior colorful. You reach it by climbing steep stairs.

The tour includes lunch and bottled water throughout the day. Your guide speaks English or Thai, and the vehicle is air-conditioned. Pickup is from your Hua Hin accommodation.
