The experience
What makes Petchaburi worth a day trip from Hua Hin is the density of old sites in one province. You start at Phra Nakhon Khiri, the Summer Palace of King Rama V, which sits on a 92-meter hill and is visible from far across the city. The cable car takes you to the top where you can walk through the white chedi and palace buildings. The palace is the symbol of the province and dates back centuries as an ancient seat of power.
From there you move to Wat Mahathat, a gleaming white temple in the center of town. Its centerpiece is a 42-meter-tall five-tiered prang in the Ayuthaya style, decorated in stucco relief: a specialty of Phetchaburi's local artisans that you'll notice throughout the town. Inside the sanctuary are early-20th-century murals, though they are damaged. About 4 kilometers north of town lies Khao Luang Cave, one of Thailand's most impressive cave shrines. You climb steep stairs to enter a dramatic stalactite-filled cavern. Every morning (weather permitting), sunbeams filter through a natural skylight and light up the interior. The cave was a favorite of King Rama IV when he was a monk, and it holds Buddha statues of different sizes and positions throughout.
The tour runs six hours total and includes an air-conditioned vehicle, an English-speaking guide, bottled water and lunch. Hotel pickup from Hua Hin is part of the booking, so you don't arrange transport separately. The route is suitable for all fitness levels, and the sites are wheelchair accessible.
