The Experience

Khao Sok National Park sits 150 kilometres north of Phuket at 900 metres elevation, and the drive there crosses the island's west coast and climbs through cultivated land before reaching the park's edge. You're picked up from your hotel at 7am, and the first stop comes at Ton Prai Waterfall, where a short jungle trek takes you deep enough into the rainforest to feel the temperature drop and hear the water before you see it. The park itself is Thailand's largest virgin rainforest — dense, steep-sided, and nothing like the beaches you left behind.

The morning builds toward the elephant camp, which you reach around 10am after driving over the Cloud pass. Then comes the canoeing: roughly two hours paddling a river that winds through the canopy, moving at the pace the water sets rather than a schedule. The guide navigates; you paddle and watch the banks slide past. By 4pm the day's activity is done, and the drive back to Phuket takes the sunset with it — you're back at your hotel around 6pm.
