The Experience

You start with hotel pickup in central Chiang Mai, then ride an air-conditioned vehicle up the mountain for about 90 minutes. The first stop is Wachirathan waterfall, the tallest in the park—the water drops so far it creates mist that catches the sun and throws rainbows across the rocks. Mossy boulders and emerald pools frame the base, and the spot is crowded with photographers by mid-morning, so the early timing matters. From there you move to Sirithan waterfall, where the Mae Klang River cascades down a dramatic cliff face; you view it from a scenic overlook rather than walking to the base, which keeps the pace steady and the group together.

Next comes the King and Queen chedis—two mirrored pagodas built to honor the former Thai royal couple, sitting at the summit surrounded by manicured flower gardens with valley views that drop away on all sides. The site is a religious space, so shoulders and knees stay covered. After that, you walk the Ang Ka Nature Trail, a short, easy boardwalk through dense highland forest where the air is noticeably cooler and the moss hangs thick on every tree. The trail is wooden and flat, not a hike, and you move at your own pace while the guide points out the flora and birdlife that only thrive at this altitude. Then you visit Baan Mae Klang Luang, a Karen village surrounded by coffee fields and rice terraces, where you can sample locally roasted coffee and learn how the community shifted from opium farming to agriculture and tourism. The drive back to Chiang Mai takes another 90 minutes or so, and you're dropped at your hotel by late afternoon.

The tour runs nine to ten hours total, including all travel time between stops. You get one bottle of water per person and an English-speaking guide. National Park entry (300 baht per person) and lunch are not included and must be paid in cash on the day. Pickups start up to 45 minutes before the listed tour time, so plan for an early morning. The operator runs tours rain or shine, and during the cool season (November to February) it's worth bringing a sweater or jacket—the mountain is noticeably colder than Chiang Mai.

Top questions

What's the highest point I'll reach on this tour?

Doi Inthanon sits at 2,565 meters above sea level, making it the highest point in Thailand. You'll spend time at the summit exploring the Royal Pagodas and the Ang Ka Nature Trail, where the air is crisp and the views stretch across the valley below.

How difficult is the nature walk on this tour?

The Ang Ka Nature Trail is short and easy—a wooden boardwalk platform suitable for all fitness levels, not a strenuous hike. You walk at your own pace through dense, mossy highland forest and can take your time enjoying the unique flora and birdlife.

What waterfalls will I see?

You'll visit Wachirathan waterfall, the tallest in Doi Inthanon National Park, where the height creates mist and rainbows on sunny days, and Sirithan waterfall, where the Mae Klang River cascades down a cliff face that you view from a scenic overlook.

Is lunch included in this tour?

Lunch is not included and must be paid separately on the day of the tour. You'll have time to eat in the park or at the Karen village, and you can bring your own food or purchase meals locally.

What should I wear to visit the Royal Pagodas?

The King and Queen chedis are a religious site, so dress respectfully: wear long pants or a skirt, cover your shoulders, and avoid flip-flops and revealing tops. Knees should also be covered. During the cool season (November to February), bring a sweater or jacket since the mountain is noticeably colder than Chiang Mai.

Does the tour price include the National Park entrance fee?

The National Park fee of 300 baht per person is not included in the tour price and must be paid in cash on the day. Some booking options include the 400-baht entrance fee; check which option you select at checkout.
