Red colobus monkeys in the forest, then spices you can taste straight from the plant
A private half-day tour in Zanzibar pairs a guided walk through Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park with a visit to Jambo Spice Farm. In the forest, you'll spot red colobus monkeys (a rare species found only in Zanzibar) along with blue monkeys, elephant shrews and bushbabies, crossing a built bridge through the mangrove. At the spice farm, you learn, smell and taste clove, nutmeg, vanilla, cinnamon, turmeric, cardamom and tropical fruits growing there, and watch a farmer climb a coconut tree while singing traditional songs.

Step-by-step itinerary
Visit Jozani Forest and Spice Farm
- Tour Jozani National Park
- Observe red colobus monkeys
- Walk through mangrove on bridge
- Explore Jambo Spice Farm
- Smell and taste local spices
- Watch coconut tree climbing
- Enjoy fresh tropical fruits
The experience
You start in Jozani National Park, a dense groundwater forest where the red colobus monkey lives. These small primates are found nowhere else on earth, and the park's built boardwalk lets you watch them without disturbing the forest floor. Blue monkeys, elephant shrews and bushbabies move through the same canopy, and the mangrove section at the park's edge gives you a close look at how the coastal forest transitions into salt water.
After the forest, you head to Jambo Spice Farm, where Zanzibar's reputation as the Spice Island takes physical form. You don't just see the plants. You touch the leaves, smell the flowers, and taste the spices where they grow: clove, nutmeg, vanilla, cinnamon, turmeric, cardamom, lemongrass, black pepper and more. The farm also grows tropical fruits, and you'll sample fresh coconut juice, banana, mango, pineapple and watermelon. A farmer climbs the coconut tree while singing Jambo Bwana, a traditional Zanzibari song, turning the harvest into a moment rather than just a demonstration.
Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or German throughout, and the tour includes all entry fees, private transportation from your hotel, and bottled water. The whole experience runs about six hours, which leaves room for other plans if you arrive with a free afternoon or want to explore Stone Town afterward.
