Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Safari at Tarangire National Park

  • Arrive at Tarangire National Park
  • Take game drive to see elephants and wildlife
  • Observe baobab trees and other animals
  • Enjoy lunch and dinner at Marera Valley Lodge

Day 2 — Explore Ngorongoro Crater and depart

  • Visit Ngorongoro Crater for wildlife viewing
  • See elephants, rhinos, lions, and flamingos
  • Have breakfast and lunch during the day
  • Travel to Arusha or Kilimanjaro Airport

I didn’t expect to feel so small when we first rolled into Tarangire — but there’s something about those baobab trees. Our guide, Joseph, pointed out a family of elephants just sort of lumbering past like we weren’t even there. The air smelled a bit sweet and dusty, and every now and then you’d hear birds I couldn’t name. We kept stopping for giraffes or oryx (I had to ask what that was), and Joseph would laugh when I tried to pronounce their names in Swahili. Lunch was simple but good — honestly, I barely noticed what I ate because I couldn’t stop looking out the window.

That night at Marera Valley Lodge, I sat outside for a while after dinner. It got chilly fast — way colder than I thought Tanzania would be — but the quiet was kind of perfect. You could hear insects buzzing, maybe a distant hyena? Hard to tell. The bed was soft enough that I actually slept through most of the night, which never happens for me on trips.

The next morning, we headed out early for Ngorongoro Crater. The drive up felt long but not in a bad way; it’s all green hills and Maasai villages with kids waving as you pass by. When we finally reached the rim and looked down into the crater… yeah, that view sticks with you. It’s massive — like someone scooped out half a mountain. Down on the floor we saw zebras everywhere, buffalo grazing right next to flamingos in this weird pink blur on the water. Joseph explained how old the crater is (millions of years) but honestly I was too busy trying to catch sight of a rhino through my binoculars.

By afternoon it started to cloud over and everything went quiet except for our jeep engine and some distant animal calls. I remember thinking how wild it is that people live here too — Maasai herders just walking their cattle along the edge like it’s nothing special. We ended back in Arusha tired but sort of dazed in a good way. Still thinking about those elephants.
