The Experience

The drive from Arusha to Materuni takes you 15 kilometers toward Kilimanjaro's shadow, and your English-speaking guide will pick you up in the morning and handle the route. Materuni sits just before the national park boundary, and it's still a working Chagga village—not a performance for tourists, but a place where people actually live and farm and make coffee the way they have for generations. You'll register at the village office first, which takes a few minutes, and then the real walk begins: about 40 minutes uphill through the forest, with your guide pointing out the plants and animals and telling you how the Chagga have lived here, what they grow, how the land works.

The waterfall hits you suddenly. It's more than 80 meters high, and the pool at the base is cold and clear and exactly what you need after the walk. Bring swimwear—most people do swim, and it's the kind of moment you don't get back. The views toward Kilimanjaro's summit show up sometimes if the clouds cooperate, but even without them the water and the rock face and the sound are enough. You'll spend time here, not rushed, and then walk back down to the village at an easier pace.

Lunch is traditional Chagga food—a box lunch with local flavors—and this is where the banana beer arrives. It's not what you'd expect, and your guide will explain what goes into it. After eating, the coffee part begins, and it's genuinely hands-on. You'll see how the beans are grown, dried, roasted, and ground, and you'll help with the grinding yourself while the guide and villagers sing Chagga songs. It sounds like it could be awkward, but it isn't—it's the kind of thing that sticks with you. You roast and grind what you'll drink, and then you sit with the coffee and the rainforest views before heading back to Arusha or Moshi in the afternoon.

The Kikuletwa hot springs are also included, though the itinerary doesn't specify exactly when they fit into the day—ask your guide about timing when you're picked up. The whole experience is built around what the Chagga actually do, not around what looks good in a photo, which is why it feels different from the usual waterfall-and-lunch circuit.

What’s included

Your day includes hotel pickup from Arusha or Moshi with an English-speaking guide, entry to Materuni Waterfalls and Kikuletwa hot springs, a traditional Chagga lunch with banana beer, and a hands-on coffee roasting and grinding experience with live commentary. Is this one for you?Good for travelers who want to spend a full day in an actual Chagga village doing real things—swimming, eating local food, learning how coffee is made—rather than moving quickly between photo stops. The 40-minute walk and the afternoon return time mean you're not rushing, which is what makes the coffee experience and the lunch feel genuine instead of staged.
