Step-by-step itinerary
Dolphins, Turtle Cave, and Jozani Forest
- Early-morning dolphin boat trip
- Swim and snorkel with dolphins
- Visit Salaam Turtle Cave
- Swim and observe rescued turtles
- Guided walk in Jozani Forest
- See Red Colobus monkeys and mangroves
The experience
Your day starts before sunrise with a boat trip into Kizimkazi's waters when bottlenose and spinner dolphins are most active. Snorkeling equipment is provided, and if conditions allow, you can swim close to them. The guide reads the water and the animals' behavior, so the encounter depends on what shows up that morning rather than a fixed script.
After the dolphins, you head to Salaam Turtle Cave, a natural limestone pool hidden inside a cave where the local community cares for rescued sea turtles. You swim in the clear, cool water and watch the turtles move around you: close enough to see their shells and flippers but in their space, not a tank. The cave itself is the attraction. The turtles are what make it matter.
The afternoon takes you into Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park, Zanzibar's only national park. A guide leads you through the natural forest on foot and along a mangrove boardwalk, pointing out the rare Red Colobus monkeys and explaining how the different zones of the park work. Eight hours is long enough to move through all three without rushing, but not so long that you're sitting idle between stops.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (under 4).
What time does the dolphin tour start in Kizimkazi?
The boat trip departs early in the morning when dolphins are most active, so you'll be on the water before the day heats up and the animals move deeper offshore.
Can I swim with the dolphins?
Snorkeling equipment is provided and you have the option to swim close to the dolphins if conditions are good, but whether that happens depends on the dolphins' behavior and what the guide judges is safe that day.
What are the sea turtles in Salaam Cave?
They are rescued turtles cared for by the local community in the natural pool inside the limestone cave, so you're swimming in their habitat rather than viewing them in an enclosure.
Is Jozani Forest difficult to walk through?
The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. You walk through the natural forest and along a mangrove boardwalk with a guide, so the pace is set by the group and the guide adjusts to who is there.
Does the tour include lunch?
Lunch is not included, but bottled water is provided throughout the day and you'll have time to eat at a stop if you bring food or arrange something locally.
