The experience

The Lemosho Route starts with a 3–4 hour drive from Arusha or Moshi to Londorossi Gate, then a shorter transfer to the trailhead where the actual climbing begins. Day one takes you through lush rainforest to Mti Mkubwa Camp at 2,650 meters, where your chef prepares dinner and you sleep under canvas. The route's signature move is its gradual ascent: you spend the next three days crossing the Shira Plateau and moving through moorland and alpine desert, sleeping at progressively higher camps (Shira 1, Shira 2, then Barranco) while your body adjusts to thinner air. This slow climb is deliberate. It's the reason the Lemosho has higher summit success rates than steeper routes.

Day four is the critical acclimatization day: you climb to Lava Tower at 4,600 meters, then descend to sleep at Barranco Camp, a strategy that trains your body to handle altitude. Days five and six move you through the Barranco Wall (a scramble with views across the alpine desert) and up to Karanga Camp and then Barafu Camp, the staging ground for the summit push. The final ascent starts just before midnight on day seven: you'll climb by starlight, pass Stella Point, and reach Uhuru Peak as the sun rises over the African plains. After photos and celebration, you descend back through Barafu Camp and continue down to Mweka Camp in the forest zone for your last night. Day eight is the final trek through rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificate and a vehicle returns you to your hotel.

The route passes through five distinct climate zones (rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, the Shira Plateau and the high alpine zone), so the landscape shifts constantly and you're rarely on the same terrain twice. Colobus monkeys appear in the forest. Views of Kibo Peak and Mount Meru open up as you climb. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or German, and the team handles all camp setup, cooking and water logistics, so your job is to walk, acclimatize and reach the summit.

Is this one for you? This is a shared trek with a guide and support team, not a solo climb or a fully private expedition. Choose it if you want expert guidance, lower crowds than the Marangu or Machame routes, and the time to acclimatize properly: the eight days and gradual ascent are what make the summit realistic for fit trekkers who haven't climbed at altitude before.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Youth (16 to 35 years); Child (4 to 15 years); Infant (1 to 3 years).

What's the difference between the Lemosho Route and other Kilimanjaro climbs?

The Lemosho Route is one of Kilimanjaro's longest and least-crowded paths, with a gradual altitude gain that gives your body more time to adjust to high elevation. It crosses the Shira Plateau and passes through more varied landscapes (rainforest, moorland, alpine desert) than steeper, faster routes, and the lower foot traffic means fewer climbers on the trail and at camps.

When do we attempt the summit, and how long does the climb to Uhuru Peak take?

The summit push starts just before midnight on day seven, after an early dinner and rest at Barafu Camp. You'll climb by starlight for several hours, passing Stella Point before reaching Uhuru Peak as the sun rises. The exact duration depends on your pace and acclimatization, but most climbers take 5–7 hours from Barafu to the summit.

What meals and accommodation are provided on the mountain?

Your chef prepares three meals daily at each camp (breakfast, lunch and dinner) plus tea and snacks. You sleep in a tented camp each night, with your own tent and a sleeping mat. Camps have basic toilet facilities and water for washing, though showers are not available until you return to your hotel after the trek.

Do I need previous climbing or trekking experience to do this route?

No previous climbing experience is required, but you do need a high level of physical fitness and determination. The Lemosho's gradual ascent is designed to help your body acclimatize, but you'll still be trekking 5–7 hours most days at high altitude, so training and cardiovascular fitness beforehand make a real difference.

What's included in the price, and what do I need to arrange myself?

The trek includes private transportation from Arusha or Moshi, all park admission fees, expert guide, porter support, all meals on the mountain, tented accommodation and a vehicle transfer back to your hotel after summiting. You arrange your own flights, travel insurance and any gear you don't already own (boots, warm layers, a sleeping bag).
