The experience
The day starts before dawn. You arrive at the launch site around 5:45 AM, where tea, coffee and light refreshments are waiting while the balloon is inflated. The pilot briefs you on safety and flight positions, then you watch the envelope fill and take pre-flight photos before boarding. As the sun breaks the horizon, the balloon lifts off gently, and the landscape of Tarangire spreads below in golden light: herds of elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and lions visible across the savanna without the dust or engine noise of a ground vehicle.
