The experience

You start at your hotel and drive into downtown Dushanbe for a short walk through Rudaki Park, where tree-lined paths pass the Palace of Nations, the Somoni monument, the national library and statues. The park sits next to the National Museum, which holds frescoes from Old Panjakent and an entire floor of works by Tajik artists. From there you visit Navruz Palace, a royal residence with four decorated halls, then move through Mehrgon Bazaar in the north of the city. A large market where you can browse fresh produce and dried goods alongside locals.

Independence Square comes next, a newer park built for Tajikistan's 32nd independence anniversary. Its 124-meter tower is the highest in Dushanbe, and climbing it gives you a view of the whole city and its surroundings. You also see the new central mosque, the largest in Central Asia. After these stops in the capital, the tour heads outside the city to Hissor Fortress, a preserved 18th-century site 26 km away. There you walk through the fortress remains, visit two local madrasahs and a mausoleum before returning to Dushanbe and your hotel.
