The Experience

The first thing I remember is the steam—rising up from a tiny stall somewhere behind the neon and glass of Taipei 101. Our guide Li waved us over, grinning, and handed me something that looked like a burger but with impossibly fluffy bread. “Gua bao,” she said, and I tried to repeat it (Li laughed—my Mandarin is hopeless). Pork, peanuts, cilantro—soft and salty and a little sweet. The air was thick with frying oil and something I couldn’t place at first… later I’d realize it was stinky tofu drifting from another cart down the lane.

We zigzagged through XinYi’s backstreets while Li pointed out things I’d have missed: an old lady selling candied tomatoes on sticks; a temple hidden behind scooters; kids chasing each other past bubble tea shops. At Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, we ducked into what used to be a tobacco factory—now it’s all art spaces and dumpling stalls. The soup dumplings were so hot I nearly burned my tongue (worth it), and the pineapple cake had this crumbly texture that stuck to my fingers. I probably ate too many but nobody seemed to mind.

At one point we paused in front of the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. There was this perfect gap between buildings where you could see Taipei 101 glowing above everything else. It felt weirdly peaceful for such a busy city—just people sitting on benches sipping tea or scrolling their phones. Later, someone dared me to try the infamous stinky tofu. Honestly? It smelled like gym socks left in a locker room but tasted way better than expected. Still not sure if I’d order it again but hey, when in Taipei…
