The experience

Your driver-guide meets you at your Zurich hotel and drives you south toward Kriens in a modern luxury Mercedes. From there, you take the panoramic gondolas up to Fräkmüntegg, then board the Dragon Ride (an aerial cableway with windows designed to give the sensation of flying) for the final ascent to the summit. At 2,132 meters (6,982 feet), you stand in front of 360-degree views of 73 peaks and the Swiss Alps spreading across the horizon. The Dragon Trail offers a short walk along the ridge, or you can rest on the panorama terraces and order lunch from the restaurants at the top.

The descent defines the day: you board the world's steepest cogwheel railway, which drops at a 48% gradient through dramatic rock tunnels, alpine forests, and meadows down to Alpnachstad. This is the only cogwheel railway on earth that operates at such an angle, and the engineering alone makes the ride unforgettable. From Alpnachstad, you transfer to a boat for a one-hour cruise across Lake Lucerne (also called the Lake of the Four Cantons), seeing the landscape from the water and the mountains from an entirely different perspective. The boat returns you to Lucerne, where your driver collects you for the private drive back across Central Switzerland to your hotel in Zurich.

The tour operates May through mid-October, when the Golden Round Trip is in full operation. If you travel between late October and late November, the Kriens gondolas close for maintenance, but Pilatus remains accessible via the Alpnachstad cogwheel railway. Your driver-guide will adjust the route accordingly. The entire day runs about 9.5 hours from pickup to drop-off. Children from age 5 are welcome, and the tour includes all transport, the guide, and every cable car and railway ticket. You arrange your own lunch at the summit restaurants or in Lucerne.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (5 to 15 years). Children under 5 can't be included in the booking.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What is the Dragon Ride and why is it part of this tour?

The Dragon Ride is an aerial cableway with panoramic windows designed to create the sensation of flying as it carries you from Fräkmüntegg to the summit of Mount Pilatus. It is the final and most dramatic leg of the ascent, offering unobstructed views of the Alps during the climb.

How steep is the cogwheel railway descent, and what makes it different from other mountain railways?

The cogwheel railway descends at a 48% gradient: the steepest in the world. Most cogwheel railways operate at gradients between 15% and 25%, so this one is engineered to handle an angle that would be impossible for a standard train, making the descent a singular experience.

Can I visit Mount Pilatus if I'm traveling in late October or November?

Yes. The Kriens gondolas close for maintenance from October 19 to November 27, 2026, but Mount Pilatus remains accessible via the Alpnachstad cogwheel railway. Your driver-guide adjusts the route to use the lower station instead, and you still experience the full descent and Lake Lucerne cruise.

Is lunch included in the tour price?

Lunch is not included, but restaurants operate at the summit of Mount Pilatus and in Lucerne along the route. You choose where and what to eat during the day.

What do I see from the summit of Mount Pilatus?

From the 6,982-foot summit, you have 360-degree views of 73 peaks across the Swiss Alps and the blue lakes in the valleys below. On clear days, the panorama extends across much of Central Switzerland.

How long is the boat cruise on Lake Lucerne?

The cruise lasts one hour and departs from Alpnachstad after your cogwheel railway descent. You see the surrounding mountains and landscape from the water before the boat returns to Lucerne, where your driver meets you for the return drive to Zurich.
