The Experience
The first thing I noticed was how quiet it got once we stepped off the cable car — just the crunch of gravel and this crisp, piney air that made my nose tingle. Our guide, Stefan, grinned at my shoes (“good for running, bad for nerves,” he said) and handed me a helmet. I could see Lake Lucerne glinting way below us, little boats like white freckles on blue skin. Honestly, my hands were sweating already.
I thought there’d be more instructions but Stefan just clipped me in and said, “We run together. Don’t sit yet.” That’s it. We jogged toward the edge — not even time to panic — and then suddenly my feet weren’t touching anything. The paraglider caught us and everything went slow and floaty. It felt unreal, gliding over the Lucerne region with nothing but air under your toes. The wind smelled cold, almost metallic, and I swear I could hear cowbells somewhere far off (or maybe that was just my imagination). My heart was pounding so hard I had to laugh.
We drifted for maybe fifteen minutes — could’ve been five or fifty, honestly — watching rivers curl through green valleys and clouds snag on snowy peaks. Stefan pointed out some village names in Swiss-German that I immediately forgot (sorry Stefan), but he didn’t seem to mind. He let me steer for a second; I nearly spun us around by accident and he just laughed. Landing was soft — sort of like stumbling onto grass after jumping off a swing as a kid.
I still think about that feeling of weightlessness every time I see a mountain now. If you’re anywhere near Lucerne and have two hours to spare, this tandem paragliding flight is something you’ll remember in your bones.
