The Experience
The first thing I noticed was the smell—fresh pine mixed with that cold, almost electric mountain air you only get up in the Engadin Valley. We’d just stepped off the cable car and my hands were already tingling (not nerves yet, just cold). Our pilot, Luca, grinned at us—he had these sun-creased lines around his eyes—and started laying out the gear right there in the grass. I tried to help but mostly just fumbled with the gloves they handed me. It felt like everyone was moving in slow motion except for the wind.
Luca gave us this quick rundown—how to lean forward when he said go, what to do with your legs (I immediately forgot), and then suddenly we were running downhill together. The ground dropped away so fast my stomach did a weird flip. For a second all I could hear was wind and my own heartbeat. Then it was quiet—like really quiet—and we were floating above those blue lakes and glaciers. I kept looking down and thinking, “is this actually happening?”
He pointed out little villages tucked between forests and glacial streams snaking through the valley below. At one point he let me steer for a few seconds—I probably looked ridiculous but he laughed and said something in Swiss German I didn’t catch. The landing came up faster than I expected; we sort of slid onto this patch of grass near where we’d started, still buzzing from it all. My face hurt from grinning so much. The whole thing felt both longer and shorter than it really was—you know?
