The experience

I’ll admit, I didn’t know what to expect from a day trip around St Maarten & St Martin. The first thing that hit me was the smell near the Great Salt Pond: kind of briny, almost metallic, but not unpleasant. Our guide (I think her name was Simone?) pointed out the Salt Pickers statue and told us how salt shaped the island’s history. She had this way of pausing between facts, like she wanted us to really picture it. The old days when people would harvest salt under that same sun. I could see Philipsburg just across the water, all pastel colors and little boats bobbing.

We zigzagged through Fort Willem next: Simone slowed down so we could catch glimpses of Great Bay and Fort Amsterdam jutting out into the sea. There was a breeze up there that made my shirt flap around, and someone behind me kept laughing about their hair getting tangled. At Harold Jack Hill we stopped for photos. You could see Simpson Bay stretched out below with these ridiculous mega yachts parked like they owned the place. The airport runway looked tiny from up high. I tried to spot Saba on the horizon but got distracted by a guy selling cold coconuts at the lookout: should’ve grabbed one honestly.

Crossing into the French side felt weirdly casual: a quick wave at the Concordia Monument and suddenly we were in France (Simone said “Bienvenue!” with a grin). Marigot had this sleepy vibe. Bakery smells drifted out into the street, sweet and yeasty. I bought a pastry I couldn’t pronounce (Li laughed when I tried to say it in French), and we wandered past stalls selling spices and bright sarongs. Some locals were arguing over fish prices at the waterfront market but nobody seemed actually mad about it.

Grand Case was all about food again: cafés everywhere, people eating outside even though it was hot enough to melt cheese on your plate. Paradise View lived up to its name (I mean, it’s not subtle), but what stuck with me more was just leaning on a fence there looking out at Orient Bay and feeling…quiet? Like everything slowed down for a minute before we piled back into the van. On the drive back through Quartier d'Orléans Simone told us about her grandmother’s stories from when she grew up here: her voice got softer then. We ended up back where we started, tired but kind of full in every sense.
