The Experience

“You’re not from here, are you?” That’s how our guide, Marcia, greeted us in the parking lot just outside the cruise port in Philipsburg. She had this easy smile and a way of making you feel like she’d known you for years. Right away she started pointing out the salt pond behind us—apparently it’s been shaping life on St Maarten forever. I didn’t expect to care about salt, but she made it weirdly interesting. The air was warm but not sticky yet, and there was this faint smell of sweet bread drifting from somewhere nearby (which turned out to be important later).

The drive across St Martin & St Maarten felt like flipping through two very different books at once. We stopped at this lookout where you could see Great Bay stretched out below—tiny boats moving like toys.
