The Experience

The first thing I remember is the way the morning air tasted—kind of salty-sweet, like you’re breathing in ocean and mango at the same time. We climbed into Edmund’s van just outside our hotel in Soufrière (he’d greeted us with this big, easy laugh), and within minutes we were winding past little fishing villages painted in colors that don’t even have names. The windows were down and I could hear someone playing soca from a porch as we passed. It felt like being let in on a secret, honestly.

I’d seen photos of the Pitons before but seeing them up close from the boat—different story. They’re just there, rising out of nowhere, green and impossible. Edmund slowed down so we could take photos (he said he still stops to look after all these years). Later we got off for the Sulphur Springs mud bath. The smell hit me first—eggy but not gross, if that makes sense? My skin felt weirdly soft after smearing on that gray mud. There was a group of locals laughing nearby, splashing each other with muddy water. I tried not to slip getting back into my flip-flops.

Lunch was this huge plate of stewed chicken, plantains, something spicy I couldn’t pronounce (Li laughed when I tried to say it). No KFC or anything like that—just real St Lucian food. Afterward at Sugar Beach, I floated on my back watching sunlight flicker over the water and thinking about how far away home felt. The snorkeling gear was included but honestly I spent more time just drifting around than looking for fish. We stopped at a bat cave too—the guide pointed it out with a grin like he knew half of us would be squeamish.

I didn’t expect to feel so relaxed by the end—maybe it was all that sun or maybe just how everyone seemed to know each other here. Either way, I still think about that view of the Pitons from the water sometimes when things get noisy back home.
