The experience

The 4:30 AM pickup from Ella means you arrive at Yala while the animals are still active in the cooler hours. The best window for spotting the Sri Lankan leopard, which has one of the highest densities of any leopard population on earth. The park covers nearly 979 square kilometers, split between dense jungle, open grasslands and freshwater lagoons, so the landscape shifts as you move through it. Your driver navigates the terrain in a comfortable 4x4 jeep, stopping where wildlife is most likely to appear.

Yala is home to elephants, sloth bears and crocodiles alongside the leopards, and the park records over 200 bird species: both year-round residents and seasonal migrants. The driver knows where to find them and can explain what you're seeing as the day unfolds. After the safari portion ends, you'll have time to rest and eat lunch at a nearby restaurant before the drive back to Ella. Meals are at your own expense.

The jeep ride itself is moderate in intensity, but the early start and the full day in the vehicle mean you should be comfortable with long hours of travel and uneven terrain. Bring water and sun protection. Mineral water is provided during the tour.

What animals am I most likely to see on a Yala safari from Ella?

The Sri Lankan leopard is the headline (Yala has one of the world's highest leopard densities), but you'll also encounter elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and over 200 bird species across the park's jungle, grassland and lagoon zones.

Why does the tour start at 4:30 AM from Ella?

What's included in the tour price, and what do I pay for separately?

The tour includes pickup and drop-off from Ella, the 4x4 jeep, your English-speaking driver, mineral water and all government taxes and service charges. Yala National Park entrance tickets and lunch at the restaurant are booked or paid separately.

How long is the full day, and what's the jeep ride like?

The tour runs 8 to 10 hours total, including the drive from Ella, the safari itself and the return. The jeep ride crosses uneven terrain, so you need at least a moderate level of physical fitness and comfort with several hours in a vehicle.
