The experience
You get picked up from your hotel in Ella at 7am in an air-conditioned vehicle and driven to Udawalawe National Park, arriving by 9:30am. The park was created to protect elephants displaced by the Udawalawe reservoir, and it now sustains a permanent herd of over 250 Asian elephants because of its abundant water sources. Hundreds more migrate in annually from nearby protected areas. The three-hour safari in an open jeep is where you spend the core of the morning, moving through the park with your driver to locate and watch the elephants in their habitat.
Udawalawe is also an important bird area, and morning safaris frequently turn up rare sightings: aquatic birds, birds of prey, and land birds move through in abundance. After the safari ends at 1pm, you're taken to a local restaurant for lunch. The return journey to Ella starts at 2pm, getting you back to your hotel by early afternoon. The whole outing runs about eight hours door-to-door.
