The jeep leaves your Ella hotel at 11:30 am and drives you to Udawalawe, a national park created as a sanctuary for animals displaced when the Walawe River was dammed. Once inside, the real work starts: scanning the grassland and forest for movement. Elephant herds are the draw—you'll see them in groups, sometimes dozens at a time—but the park also holds water buffalo, wild boar, spotted deer and jackals. An English-speaking chauffeur drives and points out what moves; you sit in an air-conditioned jeep with a liter of bottled water per person.

Udawalawe is one of Sri Lanka's least disturbed ecosystems, which is why bird-watchers come for the endemic species: the Sri Lankan Jungle Fowl, Spur Fowl and Green Pigeon appear regularly, along with migrated birds. The park spans 30,821 hectares, so there is room to move without crowds. The afternoon light works in your favor—animals are most active in the hours before dusk, which is when you are there.
