The Experience
We rolled out of Colombo airport with flower garlands still fresh around our necks—our driver (Nalin) grinning in the rearview mirror. I remember the air outside: thick and sweet, a little like overripe mango. By the time we reached Sigiriya that first evening, I was already half-asleep but couldn’t stop watching the silhouettes of palms flicker past. The hotel felt like a quiet landing pad after the flight—nothing fancy, but I slept hard.
The next days blurred into each other in a good way: climbing Sigiriya Rock Fortress before the sun got too fierce (my legs still remember those steps), then wandering Anuradhapura’s ruins while monks in saffron robes drifted by. At Mihintale, our guide explained how Buddhism first arrived here—he pointed to a stupa and told us about King Devanampiyatissa meeting Mahinda. I tried repeating his name and failed spectacularly; everyone laughed, including an old man selling coconuts nearby.
Kandy was noisy and bright—tuk-tuks everywhere, incense smoke curling from temple doors. We watched Kandyan dancers one evening; their ankle bells jingled so fast it almost sounded like rain on metal roofs. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic glowed gold at dusk. Nalin took us through a spice garden on the way there—I crushed a curry leaf between my fingers and it stuck with me all day. In Nuwara Eliya, everything cooled down; mist clung to tea bushes and people wore sweaters (I didn’t expect that). Tea tasted different up there—fresher? Maybe it’s just being closer to the clouds.
I’ll never forget bouncing along in a jeep at Yala National Park, dust swirling everywhere as we scanned for elephants and (maybe) leopards. Didn’t see any leopards but did spot peacocks strutting right across the track like they owned it. Afterward we drove south to Mirissa—the sea finally appearing blue and endless—and wandered Galle Fort’s old walls while schoolkids practiced cricket below us. It was humid but somehow easy to breathe by then. Whale watching early one morning off Mirissa was quieter than I’d expected; everyone went silent when the first blue whale surfaced far out beyond the boats.
